Kids are constantly growing and changing. As parents and caregivers, our job is to support them through the various stages of development and find ways to help them grow into good people. At Mindful Play Learning, we believe in empowering early learners to imagine the possibilities through mindful play! Our methodology was created by the founder, Yolonda Deon Tyler, and focuses on what we call the 3 C’s of Play: Community, Creativity, and Cognitive Development. These three areas are separately defined, but build on one another as children play.
We define community as a feeling of fellowship with others due to sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. Playing with other children and developing individual as well as shared interests and ideas is one of the first ways that children begin to form a community. This is important for development in creating relationships with others and feeling connected to those around them. Yolonda Deon Tyler, the creator of Mindful Play Learning, says “From interactions with family to interactions with other people outside of the home, the social interactions we encounter from the start of our life begin to shape and create the community we will imagine for ourselves for years to come.”
Creativity is the use of imagination or original ideas. Encouraging children to be creative allows them to express themselves and fosters their ability to come up with their own new ideas. The use of a child’s creativity opens up a door to the development of other skills alongside the growth of their creative mind.. "PLAY produces some of the most interesting ideas and concepts. However simplistic PLAY seems to you, there is an entire complex symphony that can happen in your universe as you PLAY. When we use our imagination during PLAY, we learn empathy; we learn to regulate our emotions and to problem-solve. This is where our personalities are truly created and goals are constructed,” says the program creator.
Cognitive Development is the emergence of the ability to consciously be aware, understand, and articulate understanding in adult terms. Children begin developing cognitive skills in the early years of life and continue to improve with practice. Yolonda Deon Tyler says, "Cognitive skill development involves the progressive building of skills, such as attention, memory, and thinking. These skills allow us to process sensory information and encourage us to evaluate, analyze, remember, make comparisons and understand cause and effect.” This is an essential point of development and continues to progress during play.
Mindful Play Learning aims to enhance children's mental health and well-being through the methodology of our curriculum. The 3 C’s of Play, Community, Creativity, and Cognitive Development, are important areas in a child’s growth that are specifically targeted through this program.
